Kōan [koh-ahn] is a paradoxical anecdote or riddle used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke satori, or a breakthrough into free and present mind. From known to unknown, guided along as it is into the identity of opposites.
